Theodore Bernstein, JD, MBA, MPH
Theodore (“Ted”) Bernstein is a proven finance, healthcare / life sciences, and lawyer-business leader with over 25 years of deal-making and Wall Street experience. Ted’s healthcare transaction acumen is informed from an operating perspective by hands-on expertise gained as a former executive at a leading medical center and through various clinical and research roles.
Prior to joining Chapman, Ted was a Managing Partner of N-Squared Growth Capital, a New York-based private equity firm focused primarily on healthcare services and technology / business services. In that role, he concentrated on opportunity origination, deal negotiation and execution, due diligence, regulatory matters, capital sourcing, and managing operating partner and subject matter expert relationships.
In addition to his transaction expertise, Ted has extensive investing know-how. At UBS Securities LLC, he co-managed several proprietary portfolios, focusing principally on healthcare and related issuers. Ted´s other buy-side investing experiences include portfolio management or securities analyst roles at several hedge funds, including Avenue Capital Group, Basso Capital Management and Maystone Partners.
Prior to gaining his buy-side investment experience, Ted was a Managing Director at Wasserstein Perella & Co., where he was a sell-side research analyst responsible for coverage of the healthcare universe and selected food and other retailers. For his analytical work, Ted earned #1 rankings from Institutional Investor for a number of consecutive years. Further, while at Wasserstein Perella & Co., Ted worked closely with the corporate finance and corporate restructuring teams.
Before entering his career in finance, Ted acquired significant transaction experience as an attorney, primarily at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he focused on financing healthcare and technology companies through the public markets.
Ted gained his hands-on, executive level healthcare services operating experience at Massachusetts General Hospital as an Administrative Fellow. During his tenure at MGH, Ted was in charge of multiple management responsibilities in major clinical and non-clinical departments, including inpatient medical and surgical units, the Department of Nursing, the CFO´s office, Admissions, the General Counsel´s office, and the CIO´s office.
Ted is a graduate of both the University of Chicago´s Law School (JD) and Booth School of Business (MBA), Yale University´s School of Public Health (MPH), and The Johns Hopkins University (BA).
Ted represents clients throughout the U.S. primarily in healthcare, and also in business-to-business services and selected retailing segments.
